Unrealistic torso customisation controls
« on: October 02, 2017, 02:54:03 PM »
Hi, Will,

As someone with a degree in human physiology as well as being a computer programmer, I found the character customisation controls particularly jarring and flawed in places, particularly in the torso and breast customisation, modelling and rendering.  I began writing down some stuff to help you improve the modelling - there's little point just whining that something is wrong but not saying how it can be fixed - and ended up with the core of an entire scientific paper on modelling the human breast and torso.

I thought that the paper I had written might even be good enough for publishing in an appropriate scientific journal, but the one I found - http://jcgt.org/ - that is free to submit and subscribe prefers to have examples of tried and tested results, and my paper is purely theoretical at present.

If you are interested and wanted to implement my suggestions, perhaps you could provide before and after examples in return for being listed as a contributor or some such.

Additionally, the customisation for both male and female models could share most controls - pretty much everything should be configurable using the same set of controls regardless of gender with the exception of the genitalia.  Muscularity should be configurable on a muscle-by-muscle basis, or failing that, upper and lower body should be configurable seperately.  Male and female bodies are pretty much the same except for some characteristics like hip joint and shoulder joint separation and other factors that are already accounted for, and body fat distribution.  A slider from male to female with fully hermaphrodite in the middle would be preferable to a simple M/F gender switch.

If you are interested, I could add notes on modelling human male and female genitalia to my paper.

Please get rid of the additive "character name" sliders and either replace them with presets or better still, have the degree to which the character slider is moved morph from the current user settings to the character settings.  Those additive sliders can result in quite ugly output unless everything else is at its default setting.

All hair - on the head and body alike - should be RGB 255,255,255 white as its base colour, and able to take on any colour the user wants to assign.  The current shading of hair limits the user to that colour or darker.

I have recently had occasion to look at the latest release of vrtitties.

I must say that having sliders where inputting an extreme value that results in an unnatural appearance is still jarring - and a sign of an incorrect simulation model.

Any sliders should produce valid results across the full range of their values.

Will, please look at the attachment to my previous post.

Thanks for the post. There is a lot of room for improvement I agree. I will look into these issues when next working on the model.
