UE4 - MMD - IM4U - Blender
« on: October 20, 2015, 11:03:31 AM »
'Sup guys!
I've seen a few of you around here likes to import MMD stuff to UE4 or Unity.
So during my freetime I was messing around with all this stuff...

My first video was a simple import using MMD4Mecanim to Unity:

So I started to read about it a little more to know that the stuff gets converted to FBX and I tought about importing evertyhing to my favorite engine UE4.
Alright... It seems to work but for some reason I can never manage to import morph targets so there is no facial animations as you can see in my second video:

I always get an error related to morphs, must be japanese characters because the name for them it's always corrupted, well whatever, I started to search for other ways to do it and I ended up with Blender mmd_tools, it worked flawless and I made this video:

So after I finally "made it" I left this thing for a while (around a month) and then format my computer without saving this stuff.
Recently I wanted to try it again but somehow I can't reproduce what I did in Blender, I just can't remember, ugh...
Anyway, there is another tool that I always used that is involved in my videos, it's an UE4 plugin called IM4U, this plugin is supposed to import the meshes, materials (I use this materials instead of the Blender's one since here it gets imported correctly most of the time) and animations.
A day ago this plugin got updated for Unreal Engine 4.9.X and it's working very nice, but sadly I never managed to import animations and I still can't do it!
I tried all kind of models and animations (including Stratovarius animation and the nude Miku hehe) and I can never get any VMD to work.

So my question is, can anyone in here share a way to do it with Blender or IM4U?
I would like to avoid MMD4Mecanim if possible because of the usage conditions (only for Unity).

Nice forums by the way, there is a lot of interesting stuff,
Cheers!

I can't answer your questions but the stuff you make looks neat! I assume Pornulus might be able to have some info on the matter.

Haha, sorry but I can't take such credits on that, this is basically just copy pasting or exporting and importing stuff around, move things around, do lightning, put some particles... You know.

Anyway, I progressed a bit and I managed to make Blender and mmd_tools work with UE4!
For some reason some models and some animations makes the UE4 import crash.

Stratovarius animation makes the import crash on any model.
Some Teto models I have around also makes the import crash independent of the animation.
So yeah, you just gotta' be lucky and find models and animations that doesn't crashes.
For example the models TDA Miku and TDA Reimu works fine with animations like Lupin, Gentleman and others.

But still no idea how to import animations with IM4U.
I hope someone can find out how!

@jota

Nice results im a big fan of that Unity Japan Techdemo :)

where are all these mocap anims come from MMD results always fascinate me even the non dance stuff is crazy nice like the tom and jerry stuff that has normal motion and dance motions combined in the results.

Also the Cloth Physics results are so damn nice.

I really have to work out how to best integrate this into my own Character (Motion and Emotion) Workflow your results really are inspiring, thx for the realtime demo.

I really wonder what Motion Capture System Setup was used here that never could have been done manually not even by a crazy Japanese animator ;)
