[Tips] UE4 VR tips and tricks
« on: December 08, 2014, 03:13:59 PM »
Hi everyone,

I'm starting this thread to collect Unreal 4 tips and tricks that may not be big enough to warrant their own tutorial threads, but are still useful. Please contribute!

Tip: Reduce the near clip plane to allow the camera to get closer to models without them going transparent:
  • Select Edit->Project Settings->General Settings
  • Set your Near Clip Plane to a small value (0.1 seems to work out well.)

I had a tough time finding this at first. In Unity3D, this setting lives on the camera rigs, but in UE4, it's in the project settings.

Tip: Use the Preintegrated Skin or Subsurface shading model for better looking skin.
Skin isn't opaque. Light passes through it and scatters underneath. Subsurface scattering models this behavior.

Default Lit:

She looks like painted clay.

Subsurface:

Skin looks more 'alive.'

Here's a very simple example material, using a dark red (0.1, 0, 0) for the subsurface color:

You can improve these results by multiplying the subsurface color against the base color map and increasing the intensity of the subsurface color. (I used (0.5,0,0) for this one.) Other good settings: Specular 0.35, Roughness 0.4.

This gives fairly nice results.

(Also, you can save yourself some time and effort by creating a master material with parameters, and then using material instances for your individual character materials. This will allow you to develop and debug your character material once and have it apply to everyone without having to replicate all your changes by hand, and you game will run faster because your GPU will be able to reuse the parameterized shader.)

After you've gotten the hang of the basics, head over to Epic's page on skin shading to learn how to make a really good skin shader: https://docs.unrealengine.com/latest/INT/Engine/Rendering/Materials/HowTo/Human_Skin/index.html

Tip: Use the VR Game Template as a starting point for your project.

Information on where to get it and how to use it here:

Tip: Use a Subsurface shading model for a pretty good eye material.

Eyes are really important in VR. Subsurface scattering works pretty well for their materials too. Here's a simple example:

Doesn't look so bad:

And the shader complexity is still reasonable. The translucent hair is still the biggest cost.

*Free for those not making money off of it.  If your project is making more than $3000 per quarter, you owe them 5% royalties.
